Washington, DC – This week, Councilmember Henderson introduced the Enhancing Mental Health Crisis Support and Hospitalization Amendment Act of 2024. The bill would strengthen the District’s mental health processes regarding involuntary and voluntary commitment procedures.

Dear Mayor Bowser, Our strength as a community requires that we fully embrace our paramount responsibility of care and support for residents by delivering core services, improving healthcare access and delivery, building up housing and nutrition programs that stabilize families, sustaining key public safety initiatives, and making targeted investments in the District’s economic future. I wrote a letter urging Mayor Bowser to reconsider the decision to disregard District law and deny District residents an increase to their SNAP benefits in 2024. The Mayor's decision not to spend over $39 million for its intended purpose means that more than 140,000 residents will not receive the expected increase in SNAP benefits due to begin in January 2024.
