Neighbors,
Summer is in full swing, and August is coming in hot. With so much going on in the District, it can be hard to keep up. We’ve had heat advisories, summer camps galore, the NATO Summit, the Chocolate City Criterium bike race, the Broccoli City Festival, the Mubadala Citi DC Open, First Amendment demonstrations, and much more happening on the federal political scene. As we head into August, I can only hope that the rest of the summer for the District will be a little quieter.
Since the Council is on recess, this edition of the newsletter is lighter. With the next school year starting in the next 3-4 weeks, I wanted to re-up DC Health’s immunization requirements for school age children (including middle and high school students), and where you can find pediatric and adult vaccine locations throughout the community. Remember get those appointments early!

Councilmember Henderson serves as chair of TPB. The proclamation declares September 23, 2024 to be Car Free Day and invites those who live and work in the region to try alternative forms of transportation such as transit, biking, scootering, walking, and “car-lite” methods such as carpooling and vanpools in efforts to benefit the region through improved air quality, mobility, energy conservation, and reduced parking demands. On Monday, July 29, Councilmember Henderson visited once again with the Deanwood Radio Broadcast Youth Journalism Program, which was created by DC Parks and Recreation employee Salih Williams. Since 2016, more than 60 students have participated in the program with 37 graduating and pursuing education in mass communications or broadcast journalism. Over 90 percent of students who remain in the program have been accepted into a college or university. During her visit with the youth program, Councilmember Henderson discussed her journey into politics and answered student questions regarding food access and recreational programs for youth in Ward 7.
